Emily Dickinson Poetry Walk, 16 May 2009 : The Emily Dickinson Poetry walk is a long-standing Amherst Tradition, dating back to the 1970's. Now in it's thirteenth year as an Emily Dickinson Museum program, the Walk is an opportunity to mark the anniversary of the post's death by sharing Dickinson's poetry at six historic sites in Amherst. In 2009, in honor of the Museum's designation by the National Endowment for the Arts as an America Literary Landmark, the Walk featured selections of Dickinson's work read by five local poets. Keeping with tradition, the Walk concluded at the Dickinson gravesite, where walkers were invited to read a favorite Dickinson poem.

Poetry in the Garden, "I'm Nobody," A Jouney of Healing, Susan Hess, 20 July 2008 : Susan Hess is a Fiber Artist living in Georgetown Maine. She read her first Dickinson poem at age 56 which was also the age at which Emily Dickinson passed. Dickinson's poetry opened, for the first time, a "sacred closet" and allowed Susan to final sweep the memories of her childhood abuse and form a narrative for her recovery process.

Mount Greylock in Footsteps of Thoreau, 19 July 2008 : "I have come over the hills on foot and alone in serene summer days, plucking raspberries by the wayside," begins Henry David Thoreau's narration of his 1844 visit to the summit of Mount Greylock. In July of 2008 local author Lauren Stevens lead a dozen hikers along the same path to experience the mountain and better understand the philosophical observations recorded by Thoreau along the way.

Poetry in the Garden, Literary Travel with Todd Felton, 13 July 2008 : After spending the morning crawling around Quabbin Park with the local mycologists, the afternoon found me among the more cultivated environs of the "Poetry in the Garden" event at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst. Local author Todd Felton discussed the history and philosophies presented in his book "A Journey into Transcendentalists' New England" and how these influenced, despite her relative isolation, Emily Dickinson's poetry. The full text of his remarks can be found at: http://www.redroom.com/blog/robert-todd-felton/remarks-poetry-garden-event-emily-dickinson-museum

Paradise City Arts Festival, Northampton, 25 May 2008 : Paradise City Arts Festival is very much a festival rather than just a show. Live band, theatre, kenetic sculpure, craft demonstrations, and hand-on activities for the kids provide part of the dynamic interaction with the event. As passive as the artist's booths might first appear, they have their own dynamic energy in stimulating thoughts, promoting learning, and inspiring feelings. After all that is what art is. For more on the Festival see: http://www.paradisecityarts.com/spring/other/foodjazzsprg.html After the Festival I joined the Broad Brook Coalition for a wildflower walk at Fitzgerald Lake.

The annual Emily Dickinson Poetry Walk, Amherst, Massacusetts, 17 May 2008. : Held each year on the Saturday closest to Dickinson’s May 15 death, the Poetry Walk began in the garden at the Dickinson Homestead at 280 Main Street in Amherst and then proceeded to Amherst Train Station, The Evergreens, the Amherst History Museum, the site of Dickinson’s girlhood home on North Pleasant Street, and then to the West Cemetery. The walk was a program of the Amherst College's Emily Dickinson Museum. www.emilydickinsonmuseum.org
This was my first experience with the walk and I found it a delightfully spiritual connection between literary expression and the world that we share with others, including the numerous participants on the walk. I became so lost in the event that I managed to lose my written notes so to accompany my photographs in the journal below I have added my favorite poems to convey the feeling of this inspiring spring afternoon stroll. It is already on my calendar for next year.
